The Problem
Sending money still takes too many steps
Open the app, find the right account, copy an account number, confirm a name, wait for a debit alert. On a phone with bad network or low battery, that's a lot standing between someone and a simple transfer.
Bills get paid late because the process is annoying
Airtime, electricity, cable subscriptions — none of it is complicated, but jumping between apps or USSD codes to handle each one is. People forget, or just put it off, and end up paying reconnection fees for something that should've taken thirty seconds.
Paying at a shop or stall means cash or a broken POS
QR and tap-to-pay exist, but most people still carry cash for street vendors and small shops because the alternative — a slow POS terminal or a bank app that wasn't built for it — isn't actually faster.
Managing more than one bank account means managing more than one app
Anyone with a salary account and a savings account somewhere else ends up switching between two or three apps just to see where their money is. Nothing talks to anything else, so keeping track of your own finances becomes its own chore.
Bemspay's Goal
Most people don't have one banking app, they have three or four — plus a wallet of cash for whatever those apps can't handle. Bemspay's goal is to close that gap: transfers, bill payments, QR payments, savings, and multiple accounts, handled from a single app, so people stop switching between tools just to manage their own money.
Design Process
This process involves understanding user needs and business goals, conducting research, creating wireframes and visual designs, testing with users, iterating based on feedback, and collaborating with development teams to deliver an intuitive, user-centered product.

Design Approach & Proposed Solution
A brief walkthrough of the thinking behind Bemspay, the real problem that shaped it, the users it was built for, and the solution proposed before a single screen was designed.
Defining the Problem
Space
The problem came from watching how people actually bank day to day — not through one app, but three or four, plus cash on hand for whatever none of them could handle. Sending money meant switching apps. Paying a bill meant remembering which one had airtime. Paying a vendor in person usually meant cash, because none of the apps handled that moment well. That fragmentation was the brief.
One user sat at the center of it: someone managing money across multiple accounts who wanted one place to do it, not five.
Design principles
established for
Bemspay
One app, every account
A user with three bank accounts had to see and manage all three from a single dashboard, without logging into three separate apps to check three separate balances.
No dead ends on payment
Whether it was a transfer, a bill, or a QR scan at a shop, the user had to complete it in-app, without falling back to cash or a different tool halfway through.
Saving without extra steps
Setting money aside had to live inside the same flow as spending it, not sit in a separate savings product the user had to remember to open.
What this led to
These principles shaped the core structure; the account switcher, the unified transaction flow, the savings feature built into the same screens as everyday spending. The design wasn't decorative. Every screen traced back to the same question: does this reduce the number of apps someone needs open to manage their money?
Bemspay didn't start as a banking app. It started as a question: what would it take for someone to stop needing three apps to do what should fit in one?

Bemspay's impact on
Nigerian users and
businesses
Individuals
Managing money stops depending on which app happens to have the right account linked to it. Transfers, bills, and QR payments all happen from the same screen, and savings builds in the background instead of sitting in a separate app someone has to remember to open. Banking becomes something that fits around a day, not something that interrupts it.
Small businesses
Getting paid stops depending on carrying a POS terminal or trusting that cash makes it into the right account. A QR code handles it, and the money shows up against the account it's meant for, not mixed in with everything else. For a business juggling supplier payments, staff transfers, and daily sales, that separation is the difference between knowing where money went and guessing.
The wider effect
Fewer people fall back on cash because the digital option is actually faster than reaching for a wallet. Fewer payments get lost between apps because there's only one app tracking them. And for anyone managing money across more than one account, Bemspay turns three logins into one dashboard.

Proven Results
The design and implementation of Bemspay have resulted in a user-friendly and efficient digital banking experience, significantly enhancing the speed and ease of transferring money. The app's standout QR code feature allows users to quickly scan or generate QR codes for seamless peer-to-peer transactions, eliminating the need for manual account details and reducing transfer time.
